How to Eat Healthy, Even in the Summer!

Well everyone, summer is a-coming!  Here are some quick tips on how to be sure you and your family still eat healthy now that your routines may have changed.

Continue to stick to structured meal times and snacks.  That way you and your family members will be less likely to give in when you see that ice cream truck.

Continue to eat a healthy  breakfast with whole grains, some protein, calcium and fruit- make sure your breakfast has at least 5 grams of fiber since this is how you will be setting the stage for your day.

Lunches:  sandwiches are always good for packing when going to the beach or the pool.  Stick to whole grain 100% whole wheat bread, pitas, wraps and rolls.  Include some lean protein like turkey, grilled chicken or lowfat cheese.  Don't forget to include some milk or yogurt for calcium and some fruits and veggies.

Snacks:  always be sure to pack easy healthy snacks:  yogurts, whole grain crackers, sandwiches, peanuts, raisins, fresh fruit, whole grain pretzels, peanut butter, cheese sticks, etc.

Continue to stick to easy to prepare dinners made with lean meats, brown rice, whole grain pasta, potatoes or sweet potatoes and lots of vegetables and a salad.

Here are some fun summer ideas to help keep everyone healthy without going too overboard:

  • take some vanilla yogurt, put in a blender with some frozen fruit for a cool delicious smoothie
  • cut a banana in half,  stick a popsicle stick in the bottom, wrap in plastic wrap and put in freezer for a cool treat
  • make your own popsicles using 100% fruit juice
  • take advantage of all the summer season's wonderful fruits and vegetables

And of course, the occasional ice cream treat is fine!
