Buying juice and juice drinks

Posted on 14 March, 2012 at 13:05 Comments comments (94)

Hi everyone- be careful when buying juice or juice drinks for kids.  It is ok for kids to have about 6-8 oz. 100% juice per day, but that is it.  Water and milk are the best choices for the rest of the day's beverages.

When buying juice, look on the label for 100% juice.  That means that there are no added sugars.  If it is a "juice drink" that means there are added sugars.  Also, be careful of drinks that state "reduced sugar".   In most cases, they are adding in artificial sweeteners to replace the sugar.  Some of the popular artificial sweetener names are acesulfame potassium and aspartame.

Why use the artificial sweeteners when we don't know what the long term effects are on children, and why do we want to keep ourselves and our children expecting sweet every time we all drink something?  Better to train the taste buds not to have so much sweetness all the time.  The more sweet you have, the more sweet you want.

Best choices?  Water, 100% juice (6 months to 6 years- 4 to 6 oz./day; 7 years and older- 8- oz./day) and lowfat or skim milk.

Enjoy!
