Keep Up Your Eating Routine, Even in the Summer!

Now that school's out that doesn't mean that you can also take a break from eating well.

Here are a few tips to get through the summer and still maintain the diet/routine you kept during the school year.

Plan, plan, plan.  Have healthy snacks handy.  Take advantage of all the wonderful seasonal fruit.

Are you at the pool alot where there is an ice cream/snack stand?  Make one day of the week the "ice cream day" so that you do not fall into a pattern with kids of buying ice cream every day that can be hard to break.  Bring some fun, healthy snacks they like.  (i.,e, fresh fruit, portioned out amounts of pretzels, Pirate's Booty, crackers with reduced fat cheese in a cooler bag, carrot sticks, fresh berries, peaches, raisins, to go sizes of lowfat regular or chocolate milk, lowfat yogurt).   As long as you explain to your children BEFORE you get there that "we are not ordering ice cream today but we will get it on Friday so it can be a fun treat that day".  Be up front, explain and prepare.

Have easy to make healthy meals on hand.  It is hard on a hot day to think about making food- ordering food can be so much easier (but not easier on the waistline).

Here are some ideas:  pasta salad made with whole wheat pasta, beans garlic, fresh veggies, balsamic vinagrette
Whole wheat tortellini with jar of spaghetti sauce and salad
Bean burritos with black or pinto beans, reduced fat shredded cheese, salsa, fresh veggies, brown rice.

The key here is plan, plan, plan and be prepared!

I will try and post more easy summer meals.

Enjoy!
