Question: Can cranberry juice help UTI's?

Posted on 10 October, 2012 at 12:58 Comments comments (35)

Hi everyone.   I have been frequently asked whether or not cranberry juice can help a urinary tract infection.

Here is the answer:

According to studies drinking approximately 10 oz. of 30% cranberry juice may be helpful in preventing urinary tract infections.  Be careful because many of the cranberry juices that are sold are mixtures with sugar and other fruit.  Look for close to 30% cranberry juice.

I cannot find any research which shows that cranberry juice is an effective way to get rid of an existing urinary tract infection.  If you have signs or symptoms of a urinary tract infection you are advised to see your doctor.  It certainly can't hurt to start drinking cranberry juice if you have one but you want to be sure that you see a doctor to see if you need antibiotics to clear up the infection.
